Before going to Schmuhl – read the story with the group so they have prior knowledge. Brainstorm about different types of machinery in advance.
Story – Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel
Recitation bench - At the bench, each student will read a portion of the story. Another activity is that they can recite a passage they memorized.
Seatwork - When they return to their seats, they must write a sentence or story. They must change the character and the machine, then illustrate.
